In this tutorial, I will show how to create a vector illustration with a sketchy style in Adobe Illustrator. Some techniques will be discussed the results, including gradient, roughened and ink to achieve. So let's start...
I am using a scanned drawing as a starting point. This sketch is inspired by my hometown nicknamed mountain city in central China. See composition, mountains, rivers, bamboo, red pepper, fish, flowers and beautiful girl. First file > place the sketch on the Artboard and scale the sketch to fit well within the Artboard with the free transform tool (S). Then set the opacity of the sketch to 80%, multiply blending mode and lock the layer. Create new layers below the sketch layer for tracing.
I'll start by tracing the contour with the pen tool (P). Place fill white and a black 1pt stroke weight. The Illustrator file keep you organized by grouping the levels, (CTRL + G) and label accordingly e.g. lips, eyes, body. Use the ellipse tool (L), to draw the students.
I use a custom brush for eyelashes. Draw a triangle as shown with black fill, and add it to the control panel of a new art brush "brush". Set brush options Einfärbemethode art on "Shades". Use the pen tool (P) drawing just created a few curved lines as eyelashes and apply of the brush. Adjust the weight of the stroke to the result you will get the desired.
Now, the basic tracing takes place. We begin the line art to add information. To achieve an ink pen style, we add first additional lines with different weights within the forms, which we traced that. These lines are thinner than the 1pt stroke weight divisions. We use also black fill to create some shades.
Apply the shapes we created filled with solid color. This step sets the tone of color scheme, which we used for the art. It also helps to produce colors for shades and highlights.
We will add shading the skin using gradients. We will be adding several sequences with the same shape. Open the control panel "look", add new fill. We will be adding a gradient for a total shade, and we will also blush on the cheeks Add. Use the same on her body and the shoulders. With multiple layers of fill keeps light edit.
Both her face and her nose add darker shade of skin color. Add darker shade on her neck just below her chin. Add radial gradient behind the eye sockets. I prefer the filling set blending mode to darken skin shade.
Open the control panel "look", and add several courses for the eyes. Add a fun purple blue color gradient as eye shadow. Highlights of their pupils and add the skin next to the corners of the eyes.
Apply shading to transparent gradient for the lips. Add highlights, and some more defined shading on the lips, with darker red.
Open the control panel "look", and add several layers of transparent gradient to clothing. Apply multiple gradients from different directions. The multicolor transparent gradients will merge together like watercolor. Gradient to add also the fish necklace and flowers.
Repeat the previous step on the hair and the mountain to the top. You create forms of the strands of hair and rivers traverse the mountain. Experiments to create a watercolor of result set with multi colored transparent gradients that you like.
Now we have an image with watercolor and ink pen style. Press the sketchy appearance will continue, we scribble and coarse effects on their bamboo leaf bangs and earrings applied. Draw a square with black fill and 0 25pt black stroke. Select the new filling in the Panel "look" and go effect > Stylize > Scribble. Here is my setting in the Scribble Options dialog box.
Select the stroke fill in the appearance Control Panel and go to effect > "Distort" & transform > aufgerauten. Roughen, gives the line a tortured and irregular look. Use the setting in the roughen Options dialog.
Now we have a sketchy-looking square, we make the setting in a new graphic style, so that it can be easily applied, where we want it. Choose the level, with the place, which we just Scribble and roughened, applied, open the graphic style pane, and click graphic on the button new style.
Duplicate the bamboo leaves we want to distress, select the duplicates, and click the icon for the new graphic style. Now, we have some super sketchy bamboo leaves. I'll assign also the bamboo earrings roughened.
Finally, we will add a simple background, who goes with the style of watercolor.
