In the following steps you will learn how to create a detailed coffee beans text effect in Adobe Illustrator. For starters you will learn how to create a scatter brush and a simple art brush. Using these brushes along with some basic tools, effects and blending techniques plus the Round Any Corner script you will learn how to create a detailed coffee bean illustration and how to easily turn them into symbols.
Moving on you will learn you will learn how to work with built-in pattern, how to create a vertical text and how to take full advantage of the Appearance panel when working with simple shapes or text. Using our own symbols along you will learn how to use some of the most important symbolism tools. Finally, using pixel perfect vector shape building techniques, a bunch of Pathfinder options and some basic blending techniques you will learn how to create a nice coffee bean scoop.
Hit Control + N to create a new document. Enter 600 in the width box and 1100 in the height box then click on the Advanced button. Select RGB, Screen (72ppi) and make sure that the Align New Objects to Pixel Grid box is unchecked before your click OK.
Enable the Grid (View > Show Grid) and the Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid). For starters you’ll need a grid every 5px. Simply go to Edit > Preferences > Guides > Grid, enter 5 in the Gridline every box and 1 in the Subdivisions box. You should also open the Info panel (Window > Info) for a live preview with the size and position of your shapes. Do not forget to set the unit of measurement to pixels from Edit > Preferences > Units > General. All these options will significantly increase your work speed.
Focus on the top bar, set the Fill color at R=127, G=69, B=21 and the Stroke color at none. Pick the Ellipse Tool (L), create three, 3px circles and place them as shown below. Select all three shapes, open the Brushes panel (Window > Brushes) and click on the New Brush button (pointed by the little, blue arrow). Check the Scatter Brush button and click OK to open the Scatter Brush Options window. Pick a name for this new brush, enter all the properties shown in the following image and click OK. Have a new look inside your Brushes panel and you will find your scatter brush. Get back to your Artboard, make sure that the three little circles are still selected and simply delete them.
Set the fill color at R=63, G=36, B=19, make sure that the Ellipse Tool (L) is still active and create a 65 by 5px shape. Disable the Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid) and keep focusing on this squeezed circle. Switch to the Convert Anchor Point Tool (Shift + C) and click on the left and right anchor points highlighted in the first image. In the end your shape should look like in the second image. Select it, focus on the Brushes panel and hit the New Brush button. Check the Art Brush box and click OK. Pick a name for your new art brush, make sure that you enter all the properties shown in the following image and click OK. Get back to your Artboard and delete this brown shape.
Enable the Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid). Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a 58 by 40px shape and fill it with R=127, G=69, B=21. Focus on this new shape, switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A), select the top anchor point and drag it 3px down.
Pick the Pen Tool (P), create a 65px, horizontal path and place it as shown in the first image. Select it and focus on the Appearance panel (Window > Appearance). Make sure that there’s no color set for the fill then select the stroke. Add "myArtBrush" then go to Effect > Distort & Transform > Zig Zag. Enter the properties shown in the following image, click OK and go to Object > Path > Outline Stroke.
Reselect both brown shapes, open the Pathfinder panel (Window > Pathfinder) and click on the Divide button. Make sure that the resulting group of shapes is selected and hit Shift + Control + G to Ungroup it. Select the two, tiny shapes highlighted in the second image and simply delete them.
For this step you’ll need the Round Any Corner script. You can find it in the Vectortuts+ article 20 Free and Useful Adobe Illustrator Scripts. Save it to your hard drive, return to Illustrator and grab the Direct Selection Tool (A). Select the four anchor points highlighted in the first image and go to File > Scripts > Other Script. Open the Round Any Corner Script, enter a 5px Radius and click OK. In the end your dark, brown shape should look like in the second image.
Again, you will need the Round Any Corner script. Make sure that the Direct Selection Tool (A) is still active, select the four anchor points highlighted in the first image and go to File > Scripts > Other Script. Open the Round Any Corner Script, enter a 5px Radius and click OK. In the end your shapes should look like in the second image.
Disable the Grid (View > Hide Grid) and the Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid) then go to Edit > Preferences > General (Control + K) and make sure that the Keyboard Increment is set at 1px. Select the bottom, brown shape and make two copies in front (Control + C > Control + F > Control + F). Select the top copy and move it 2px down using the down arrow from your keyboard. Reselect both copies and click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shape with the linear gradient shown in the following image, lower its Opacity to 75% and change the Blending Mode to Overlay.
The yellow zeros from the Gradient image stand for Opacity percentage while the white “75? stands for Location percentage.
Select the bottom, brown shape and make two copies in front (Control + C > Control + F > Control + F). Select the top copy and move it 2px up using the up arrow from your keyboard. Reselect both copies and click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shape with the linear gradient shown in the following image, lower its Opacity to 30% and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.
Select the bottom, brown shape and make two copies in front (Control + C > Control + F > Control + F). Select the top copy and move it 5px up using the up arrow from your keyboard. Reselect both copies and click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shape with the linear gradient shown in the following image, lower its Opacity to 15% and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.
Select the bottom, brown shape and make two copies in front (Control + C > Control + F > Control + F). Select the top copy and move it 2px to the right using the right arrow from your keyboard. Reselect both copies and click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Ungroup the resulting group of shapes (Shift + Control + G), delete the right shape and focus on the remaining shape. Fill it with the linear gradient shown in the following image, lower its Opacity to 30% and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.
Select the bottom, brown shape and make a copy in front (Control + C > Control + F). Select it, move it 2px to the right then duplicate it (Control + C > Control + F). Select this new copy and move it 2px down and to the right. Reselect both shapes made in this step and click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shape with black.
Select the bottom, brown shape and make a copy in front (Control + C > Control + F). Select it along with the black shape and click on the Intersect button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shape with the linear gradient shown in the following image, lower its Opacity to 20% and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.
Select the bottom, brown shape and make two copies in front (Control + C > Control + F > Control + F). Select the top copy and move it 1px down and 2px to the left using the arrow buttons from your keyboard. Reselect both copies and click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shape with the linear gradient shown in the following image, lower its Opacity to 30% and change the Blending Mode to Overlay.
Reselect the bottom brown shape, focus on the Appearance panel (Window > Appearance) and add a second fill using the Add New Fill button (pointed by the little, blue arrow). Select this new fill, add the linear gradient shown in the following image, lower its Opacity to 40% and change the Blending Mode to Overlay.
Make sure that the bottom, brown shape is still selected and keep focusing on the Appearance panel. Add a third fill for this shape and select it. Use the linear gradient shown in the following image and go to Effect > Path > Offset Path. Enter a -6px Offset, click OK and go to Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform. Enter the properties shown in the following image, click OK and go to Effect > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Enter a 2px radius, click OK and return to the Appearance panel. Add a new fill for this shape, select it and set the color at R=127, G=69, B=21. Lower its Opacity to 20%, change the Blending Mode to Color Burn and go to Effect > Path > Offset Path. Enter a -8px Offset, click OK and go to Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform. Enter the properties shown in the following image and click OK.
Let’s move to the top, brown shape. Select it and make two copies in front (Control + C > Control + F > Control + F). Select the top copy and move it 2px up. Reselect both copies and click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shape with the linear gradient shown in the following image, lower its Opacity to 50% and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.
Reselect the top, brown shape and make two copies in front (Control + C > Control + F > Control + F). Select the top copy and move it 1px up and to the right. Reselect both copies and click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shape with the linear gradient shown in the following image, lower its Opacity to 15% and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.
Reselect the top, brown shape and make two copies in front (Control + C > Control + F > Control + F). Select the top copy and move it 1px down. Reselect both copies and click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shape with the linear gradient shown in the following image, lower its Opacity to 50% and change the Blending Mode to Overlay.
Reselect the top, brown shape and make two copies in front (Control + C > Control + F > Control + F). Select the top copy and move it 2px to the left. Reselect both copies and click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shape with the linear gradient shown in the following image, lower its Opacity to 30% and change the Blending Mode to Overlay.
Reselect the top, brown shape, focus on the Appearance panel and add a second fill. Select it, use the linear gradient shown in the following image, lower its Opacity to 50% and change the Blending Mode to Overlay. Make sure that your shape is still selected, return to the Appearance panel and add a third fill. Select it, set the color at white, lower its Opacity to 10%, change the Blending Mode to Overlay and go to Effect > Path > Offset Path. Enter a -5px Offset, click OK and go to Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform. Enter the properties shown in the following image and click OK.
Select the middle, brown shape, make sure that the fill color is set at R=63, G=36, B=19 and focus on the Appearance panel. Add a second fill for this shape and select it. Use the linear gradient shown in the following image, lower its Opacity to 35%, change the Blending Mode to Soft Light and go to Effect > Path > Offset Path. Enter a -1.5px Offset and click OK.
Select all the shapes that make up your coffee bean and Group them (Control + G). Make sure that this new group stays selected and go to Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow. Enter the properties shown in the top, left window (in the following image), click OK and go again to Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow. Enter the properties shown in the top, right window (in the following image), click OK and go once again to Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow. Enter the properties shown in the bottom, left window (in the following image), click OK and go one more time to Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow. Enter the properties shown in the bottom, right window (in the following image) and click OK.
Select the coffee bean group and duplicate it (Control + C > Control + F). Select this copy and drag it a few pixels to the left as shown in first image. Focus on this group copy, select the middle, brown shape and move to the Appearance panel. Select the bottom fill and replace the existing color with R=39, G=32, B=26. Move to the top fill and edit the existing linear gradient as shown in the following image.
Keep focusing on the coffee bean group copy. Now you need to edit the rest of the shapes that make up this second coffee bean. Basically, you need to select those shapes one by one, focus on the Appearance panel, and replace R=127, G=69, B=21 with R=71, G=58, B=48 (including the gradients). In the end your coffee bean should look like in the first image. Reselect the entire group copy and focus on the Appearance panel. Open the existing Drop Shadow effects one by one and replace the existing color with R=39, G=32, B=26.
Make a new copy of your original coffee bean group (Control + C > Control + F), select it and drag it a few pixels to the right as shown in first image. Focus on this group copy, select the middle, brown shape and move to the Appearance panel. Select the bottom fill and replace the existing color with R=40, G=22, B=7. Move to the top fill and edit the existing linear gradient as shown in the following image.
Keep focusing on the new coffee bean group copy, focus on the rest of the shapes that make up this third coffee bean and replace R=127, G=69, B=21 with R=96, G=57, B=20 (don’t forget to edit the gradients too). In the end your coffee bean should look like in the first image. Make sure that the this third coffee bean group is selected and focus on the Appearance panel. Open those Drop Shadow effects one by one and replace the existing color with R=40, G=22, B=7.
Go to Edit > Preferences > General (Control + K), check the Scale Strokes and Effects box and click OK. Open the Transform panel (Window > Transform) and make sure that the Constrain Width and Height Proportions button is checked. Select the left coffee bean group, focus on the Transform panel and simply enter 30 in the width (W:) box. Focus on the Layers panel and open this resized group. Select the bottom, brown shape and move to the Appearance panel. Focus on the third fill (start the count from the bottom), open the existing Gaussian Blur effect and decrease the radius from 2px to 0.5px. In the end your resized coffee bean group should look like in the third image.
Focus on the other two coffee bean groups and shrink them using the same techniques. Now it’s time to turn these little groups into symbols, so open the Symbols panel (Window > Symbols). Select the left coffee bean group and click on the New Symbol button from the bottom of the Symbols panel. Enter "coffeeBean1" in the Name box and click OK. Move to the middle coffee bean group, turn it into a symbol using the same techniques and name it "coffeeBean2". Select the right coffee bean group, turn it into a symbol and name it "coffeeBean3". Focus on the Symbols panel, make sure that you got your three coffee bean symbols then go to the Layers panel and simply delete the existing symbols. In the end you should have a clean Artboard.
Pick the Rectangle Tool(M) and create a shape the size of your Artboard (600 by 1100px). Fill it with the radial gradient shown below, focus on the Appearance panel and add a second fill. Make it black, lower its Opacity to 15%, change the Blending Mode to Multiply and go to Effect > Sketch > Note Paper. Enter the data shown below and click OK. Keep focusing on the Appearance panel and add a third fill for your shape. You will need a built in pattern for this new fill. Move to the Swatches panel (Window > Swatches), open the fly-out menu and go to Open Swatch Library > Patterns > Basic Graphics > Basic Graphics_Textures. This should open a new window with a simple set of built-in pattern. You will only need the "Diamond" pattern. Make sure that your rectangle is still selected, return to the Appearance panel and select that third fill. Add the "Diamond" pattern, lower its Opacity to 10%, change the Blending Mode to Multiply and go to Effect > Artistic > Film Grain. Enter the data shown below and click OK. Move to the Layers panel and lock this large rectangle to make sure that you won’t accidentally select/move it.
Set the fill color at white, pick the Vertical Type Tool and add your text. Use the Vanilla font with the size set at 150pt and the tracking at 300.
Focus on your Toolbar and double click on the Symbol Sprayer Tool (Shift + S). Enter all the properties shown in the following image and click OK. Make sure that the Symbol Sprayer Tool remains active, move to the Symbols panel and select your "coffeeBean1" symbol. Focus on a single letter from your text and simply click and drag to sprays some coffee beans as shown in the following image.
Make sure that the sprayed symbols are still selected and grab the Symbol Sizer Tool. Hold Alt (to shrink instead of enlarging) then simply click (and hold) on your sprayer symbols. Play a little with this tool. You might need some time to get used to it. Make sure that the sprayer symbols stay select, switch to the Symbol Spinner Tool then click and drag to rotate those coffee beans. Finally, pick the Symbol Shifter Tool and use it to move some of those symbols. Try to keep the coffee beans inside the boundaries of your white letter.
Get back to the Symbol Sprayer Tool (Shift + C), select the "coffeeBean2" symbol from the Symbols panel and add some new coffee beans as shown in the first image. Switch to the Symbol Sizer Tool, make sure that you hold the Alt key and shrink some of those coffee beans. Finally, use the Symbols Spinner Tool and the Symbols Shifter Tool to rotate and nudge those symbols as you like.
Return to the Symbol Sprayer Tool (Shift + C), select your "coffeeBean3" symbol and add some new coffee beans as shown in the first image. Make sure that these new symbols will cover the gaps between the existing coffee beans. You should consider adding these symbols one by one. Simply click once to add one symbol, make sure that you don’t deselect it then click again to add a second symbol in the spot that you want. As long as your sprayed symbols are selected you can easily add new symbols to that selection using the Symbol Sprayer Tool. Once you have all the new sprayed symbols that you need switch to the Symbol Sizer Tool and shrink some of those coffee beans. Finally, use the Symbol Spinner Tool and the Symbol Shifter Tool to rotate and nudge those symbols as you like.
Move to the rest of the letters and play with the Symbolism Tools as you did creating the "S".
Select all those sprayed symbols and Group them (Control + G). Focus on the Layers panel, pick a name for this new group, lock it then make it invisible.
Select the vertical text and remove that white used for the color. Focus on the Appearance panel, make sure that your piece of text is still selected and add a new fill using the Add New Fill button. Select this new fill and set the color at R=127, G=69, B=21.
Make sure that your piece of text is still selected and focus on the Appearance panel. Select that brown fill, lower its Opacity to 15% and go to Effect > Distort & Transform > Roughen. Enter the properties shown in the following image and click OK.

Focus on the Layers panel, lock the vertical text and turn on the visibility for the sprayed symbols group.
Enable the Grid (View > Hide Grid) and the Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid). For the following step you will need a grid every 5px. So, go to Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid and enter 5 in the Gridline every box. Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create an 80 by 180px shape and fill it with the linear gradient shown in the following image. Make sure that this new shape stays selected and switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A). Select the top anchor point and drag it 40px down then select the bottom anchor point and drag it 20px up. In the end your shape should look like in the second image. Move to the Layers panel and name it "scoopEdges".
Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create an 80 by 160px shape, fill it with the linear gradient shown below and place it as shown in the first image. Make sure that this new shape stays selected and switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A). Select the top anchor point and drag it 35px down, select the bottom anchor point and drag it 20px up, select the left anchor point and drag it 5px to the right then select the right anchor point and drag it 5px to the left. In the end your shape should look like in the second image. Move to the Layers panel and name it "scoop".
Using the Rectangle Tool (L), create a 20 by 45px shape, fill it with the linear gradient shown below and place it as shown in the following image. Make sure that this new shape stays selected and go to Effect > Stylize > Rounded Corners. Enter a 3 px radius, click OK and go to Effect > Warp > Arc Upper. Enter the properties shown in the following image, click OK and go to Effect > Warp >Arc Lower. Enter the properties shown below, click OK and go to Object > Expand Appearance. Move to the Layers panel and name the resulting shape "scoopHandle".
Disable the Grid (View > Hide Grid) and the Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid). Select "scoopEdges" and make two copies in front (Control + C > Control + F > Control + F). Select the top copy and move it 1px down and to the left. Reselect both copies and click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shape with R=237, G=28, B=36 (just to make it easier to spot). Reselect "scoopEdges" and make two new copies in front (Control + C > Control + F > Control + F). Select the top copy and move it 1px down and to the right. Reselect both copies and click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shape with R=237, G=28, B=36.
Reselect both red shapes and click on the Unite button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shape with black, lower its Opacity to 25% and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.

Select "scoop" and make two copies in front (Control + C > Control + F > Control + F). Select the top copy and move it 2px to the left. Reselect both copies and click on the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shape with the linear gradient shown in the following image and lower its Opacity to 10%.

Select all the shapes that make up your coffee bean scoop and duplicate them (Control + C > Control + F). Select these copies and click on the Unite button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shape with R=127, G=69, B=21 and change its Blending Mode to Soft Light.
Select all the shapes that make up your coffee bean scoop and Group them (Control + G). Select this new group and add the four Drop Shadow effects shown in the following image.
Select your coffee bean scoop group and go to Object > Transform > Rotate. Enter a -45 degrees angle and click OK. Place this rotated group as shown in the first image and move on the Layers panel. Focus on your coffee bean scoop group, select that "scoop" shape and set the angle of the gradient at 90 degrees.
Reselect your entire coffee bean scoop group and go to Object > Transform > Reflect. Check the Vertical button and hit the Copy button. Select the newly created group and place it as shown in the second image.
Get back to the Symbolism Tools and add some new coffee beans as shown in the following image.
Focus on the Layers panel and open the top coffee bean scoop group. Select the "scoop" shape and make a copy in front (Control + C > Control + F). Select this copy, drag it outside the group and place it in the top of the Layers panel. Make sure that this new shape is still selected, lower its Opacity to 50%, change the Blending Mode to Soft Light and replace the existing linear gradient with the one shown in the following image. Move to the bottom, coffee bean scoop and repeat the techniques mentioned in this step.
Finally, spread a few coffee beans around your text. Try not to exaggerate. You don’t necessarily need to use the Symbolism tools for this step. Given that you are dealing with quite a few symbol instances you can add them one by one.
Now your work is done. Here is how it should look. There are a few symbolism tools that got left out. Try out the Symbol Stainer Tool or the Symbol Screener Tool and you might be surprised by the possibilities that lie ahead.
